Description: Sweet Basil is “…a tender annual herb, with very dark green, ovate leaves, greyish-green beneath, an erect square stem up to 50 cm (24 in) high, bearing whorls of two-lipped greenish or pinky-white flowers. The whole plant has a powerful aromatic scent.” The oil “is a colourless or pale yellow liquid” ( The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils. p. 186. Extraction process: Steam distillation
Suggested Use: Use in a diffuser or dilute in a vegetable or massage oil. Essential Oil Safety, 2nd ed., recommends maximum dermal use level of 3.3% (p. 206). This means that in 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil or it’s equivalent vegetable oil (approx 5ml), you would mix up to 5 drops of Organic Sweet Basil ct linalool essential oil (p. 48). Dilution for children and infants is much greater (see p. 47 of Essential Oil Safety for dilution ratio. Reprinted by permission of author.).
Application: Sweet Basil has been “used…[for] Insect bites (mosquito, wasp), insect repellent. Gout, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism. Bronchitis, coughs, earache, sinusitis. Dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea. Cramps, scanty periods. Colds, fever, flu, infectious disease.
